This story just makes me sick to my damn stomach. I am really disgusted by this. Marvin E. Schur was a 93 year old man living in Michigan. He owed about $1,100 to his local utility company. The utility company came out and put a limiter on his electric meter which restricts the amount of electric allowed to the home. If the bill isn’t paid within a certain amount of time, the electric will be cut off totally. Now there is one fucking problem with this. In the northern states, it gets pretty damn cold during the winter. In fact, it gets cold enough to kill. Why should anyone  be subject to an electricity shut-off during the winter without making contact with someone in the house? All the utility company had to do was make contact before cutting of the electricity. It seems so fucking simple doesn’t it? This man was 93 years old. If the utility company made contact before they cut the electricity, they may have found that this man suffered from dementia or some other sort of ailment. Instead, what Marvin’s neighbors found is  ice on the windows and a below freezing temperature in the home. This is horrible. The company says that they followed procedure. What the hell? If that is their procedure, then they need to change their process. Make face to face contact during winter months and stop making excuses. Electric utilities hold a monopoly on the industry, therefore, they should be held to a higher standard before they are able to disconnect service in the winter - even if someone owes a balance. To do otherwise and possibly have a situation  where someone ends up dead is nothing but stupid.
