WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE STUPID STUFF GOING ON IN THE WORLD
I never understood how Black soldiers could want to fight for this country when they had to face so much racism in the military back in the 1940s. They would fight overseas in conditions which were worse than that of White soldiers. They would be given fewer pieces of equipment, worse assignments and were often denigrated by their White counterparts. Then they would come home and have to stay in the ‘colored’ barracks. They were not given the best jobs - even if they could do the job well - and they had to fight every step of the way to berecognized for their achievements. Yet, they still wanted to serve!
I have the same quandary now about gay people in the military. Today you have brilliant men and women who want to serve this country, but they are not allowed to do so because they are gay! What the hell is that about? An openly gay person can serve in the military in Israel, but not in America - land of the free, home of the brave? Are you kidding me? An openly gay person can serve in Australia, but not in America - land of the free, home of the brave? An openly gay person can also serve in the British military, but not in America - land of the free, home of the brave. What is wrong with that picture?
Military officials say that gay people would disrupt cohesion. Are heterosexual American military men and women too stupid to behave themselves around someone who is openly gay when soldiers in other countries can and do? Give me a break! Officials need to give our soldiers more credit. This is only an issue because the top brass in the military have decided to make it an issue. One of these days the military officials are going to take a long look at their dwindling forces and they are going to have to make a choice - just like theĀ military officials had to do over Blacks in the military. That choice is to stop being close-minded ass wipes and let gay men and women serve if they want to or keep pushing out good people who are openly gay. I, for one, am personally so thankful to the White, Black, gay, straight, sideways and all other people who want to serve. I’m glad someone wants to do it because I sure as hell don’t - AND I KNOW I’m not alone. We as a nation should be grateful that anyone wants to go out and possibly die for this country. One day the military will get it’s act together and stop this wholesale discriminatory ‘Don’t Ask! Don’t Tell’ policy. Until then, I will say that discriminating against anyone, including gay people or Blacks or Whites, is very, very stupid.
