Thomas, the funny thing is that A LOT of people do not think about this. I find it sad that people don't stop to think about the ramifications of not having health insurance. Most of us think nothing will ever happen to us. I know I did. However, I have health coverage and auto insurance. You never know what you might need in the future and an emergency room isn't the place for regular office visits to the doctors. I'm glad that there are people like you out there who realize this.

I always try and make this argument to conservatives in my state and I honestly think it is the best way to convince people that the health care bill is necessary. I think many people fail to realize that emergency rooms must treat you, and that those without health insurance are all the more likely to end up in the ER as they may not visit a doctor until things get out of hand. People hate uninsured drivers more than communists.

Shelton you got cut off there, but thinking about auto insurance helps put things in perspective. One careless driver can ruin your life if they don't have insurance. It is a protection. Health insurance is even more necessary than car insurance because EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US HAS A BODY THAT IS GOING TO MALFUNCTION AT SOME POINT....some sooner than others.

Don't usually reply to posts but I will in this case. I don't agree with your view point but, if you expand on your ideas maybe you can convince me. Let's talk about this post further. Twit me at @hermar

First, WP Wily don't be so pedantic. I use auto insurance as an example because it is compulsory - not because it is a state or federal mandate. Second, different states have different requirements on the level of basic insurance you are required to have, BUT the idea is that you have insurance to protect the person you might hit AND yourself - although those requirements vary. The BASIC insurance that some states make you get requires you to have insurance for both YOURSELF and the person you might hit depending on your circumstances (i.e. if you carry a lien against your vehicle, etc.). Now, you might be thinking that auto insurance doesn't apply to you if you don't drive, but let me ask you this - who would you sue if you GET HIT by someone who DOES NOT have insurance AND does not have enough money to pay for your injuries? Do you get the point? It doesn't matter if YOU don't have a vehicle and don't buy insurance yourself. Someone who does not have that coverage and hits you can change your life. Insurance is a necessity - both health insurance and auto insurance (if you drive). As for your bills, what happens when people DON'T pay their hospital bills????? It happens all the time. Yes the hospital can come after you, but there comes a point where it is not financially feasible for them to come after you (i.e. it costs more to collect than it does to write off the debt). Does everyone have the money to pay for their hospital care? If you say yes, I would like to know what world you live in. What happens when a hospital has to write off debt? Who, in the long run, ends up paying for that? Most hospitals are subsidized entities. Now guess who ultimately pays for those subsidies my dear...

As for me calling myself independent, I am. Independent in the sense that I am not controlled by a party or interest group - specifically neither Democrat nor Republican. You need to make sure you understand the definition of something W before you say I am not that - although you are entitled to say whatever you want. I look at the situation, take in the information and make judgments about things based on what I feel. I'm conservative in some instances and liberal in others. And as for being honest with my readers, I think they are smart enough to make up their minds for themselves. That is as honest as it can get.

You do realize that the requirement for auto insurance is a state thing, and not a federal thing, right? And that the requirement for auto insurance is for liability for damage you might do to another person or person's property, not your own, correct? You don't need to buy auto insurance if you don't drive a car. How do I get out of buying health insurance if I don't want it? Why do you feel that you would be paying my bill if I didn't have health insurance, aren't doctors and hospitals fully capable of sending me invoices and collecting against me? Why would I even WANT you to pay my doctor bills, it would give you have control over my health decisions.

BTW, I've read some other entries in your blog, and you're not an Independent. I mean you can certainly call yourself whatever you wish, but in the manner that we use language to describe specific thoughts and concepts, "Independent" in the political sense is a complete mischaracterization. At least be honest to your readers.
