Just when you think you have heard it all, something funny jumps out at you and just makes you shake your head in disbelief.  Senator Jon Kyl, a Republican from Arizona, decided to not support a measure outlining basic maternity care because, as he puts it, “I don’t need it.”

The Senator assumes that because he is a man he shouldn’t have to pay for a provision in the public health care system requiring mandatory maternity coverage. Perhaps Senator Jon Kyl just hatched from some egg laid by a chicken. Maybe he had no mother and, therefore, didn’t require any of the basic benefits of a hospital that most women afford their newborn babies. Perhaps he was created in a jar and was grown with the assistance of lab workers until he reached his current age. I think that has to be the case because no man on earth could be stupid enough to think that he doesn’t need to cover maternity care.

Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) argued, “I don’t need maternity care, and so requiring that to be in my insurance policy is something that I don’t need and will make the policy more expensive.” Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) interjected into Kyl’s remarks to remind him, “I think your mom probably did.”

Senator Jon Kyl presumably had or has a mother. She needed care. He may have or may have had a wife and children. Undoubtedly, she needed maternity care. Why shouldn’t insurance be required for everyone who has a child Senator Kyl? Many people don’t realize how bad our current health system is. There are many insurers who currently cover things like Viagra, but don’t cover birth control for women.

People need to stop being stupid about health care. Babies don’t come from thin air Mr. Jon Kyl! Men who insert their private parts into women get the women pregnant, in case no one informed you about that. The woman, Mr. Kyl, has to push the baby out at some point - usually around 9 months. That action typically requires some medical professional. Does Senator Jon Kyl not realize that medical care for a baby costs money? I bet he is pro-life too. It’s always cheaper to kill the baby you know. Maybe that’s what he was secretly hoping women without adequate health care would just have abortions so no health care would be needed.

Whatever his hopes or his thoughts are, I hope the people of America send him a message - loud and clear - that says women NEED health care so that they can have little Republicans and little Democrats (OK and little independents too!).

Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) rocks - by the way!
