WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE STUPID STUFF GOING ON IN THE WORLD
OK. I’m a little confused. Sarah Palin announced today that her daughter is pregnant. As we all know, Sarah Palin is anti-abortion - even in cases of rape or incest. She also does not believe in premarital sex. She believes in abstinence. In fact, she doesn’t believe that sex education should be taught in schools. Perhaps she doesn’t believe that sex education should be taught in the home either. Now her 17 year old daughter is 5 months pregnant. While she may be happy to be on the way to being a grandmother, according to the statement she released, the issue I have is with her beliefs. How do you explain adhering to a policy and, ultimately, trying to enforce your views on others, when you can’t even enforce those views in your own home? I know that we can’t always control our children, but, we can control many of the situations they encounter. Palin has 5 children. Was she spending too much time focused on other things that she missed what was going on right in front of her? Was she blind in thinking that there are teens that don’t want to be abstinent? Was she so stuck on abstinence that she didn’t think her daughter needed contraception? I think those are questions that we will never have the answer to. What I do know is that abstinence in and of itself won’t make the grade when it comes to preventing teen parents. If a staunch, right wing mother of 5 who absolutely does not believe in abortion or premarital sex can have a daughter that ends up being a teen mother, then I think we need to think twice about preaching abstinence only. I think the Republican party needs to wake up and focus on what is REALLY going on and not just what they WANT to go on.
