WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE STUPID STUFF GOING ON IN THE WORLD
Seth and Melinda Moser seem like good people. Last year, I found out about the Moser family and Carlos Jamison Moser. Carlos is the child of an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala. His mother was arrested. Her native language is Spanish and she speaks limited English. She has a very limited education and can’t read or write English well. She was in this country working undocumented when she was arrested. The problem was that she had no one to care for her newbord son during that time. The child was placed in the foster care system and adopted. Her parental rights were terminated. When she got out of prison, she tried in vain to get her child. However, the courts ruled against her.
Initially, I was very upset with Seth and Melinda Moser for not giving Ms. Romero’s child back to her. Then I started digging into the case more and I have to be honest. I feel that Seth and Melinda Moser can provide a better life for this little boy. However, I have a bigger issue with this case. Should a woman’s parental rights be terminated if she is an undocumented alien in this country and gets arrested? The mother was arrested for using another person’s social security number. I can understand wanting a better life and being willing to try anything to get that life. I also understand that kids have needs that don’t wait.
I can’t write a long dissertation on this case right now, because just thinking about it makes me sad. However, I wish Seth and Melinda Moser would let Ms. Romero see her son and I wish the US would close the loophole to take kids from immigrants when they are arrested for things like using a false social security number. That seems like a steep price to pay - especially when American parents go to jail for much worse and retain their parental rights. I will write more about this story later.
