Have you ever watched a movie that critics rated poorly and found it to be a good movie? Well I have. I just watched the movie Stomp The Yard for the first time and I am so surprised that critics gave it a bad rating. It makes me wonder what the fuck critics are thinking when they rate movies.

The movie is about a guy who enjoys group dancing. He decides to go up against this rival dance group and after a spirited battle which he wins, someone in the other group gets upset and kills his brother. Too much gun violence! Anyway, the kid goes to live with his aunt and uncle. They enroll him in college and he starts trying to make his way as a freshman at the school. He ends up realizing that he needs people and that there are more important things to consider than just yourself. The story is a good one, but critics blasted this movie when it came out. In fact, if you look on Rotten Tomatoes, you would think that this is the worse movie ever (next to Mariah Carey’s Glitter, which I also like by the way). The truth is that they totally missed the point of the movie. A lot of them focused on the chaotic camera work during the early dance scenes, but they missed the whole plot of the movie which was clear, to the point and well illustrated. Although I already knew the truth about how critics rate movies according to the amount of palm greasing the movie studios do, seeing how good this movie really was yet how it was beaten down has given me a newfound hate for critics. I’m not a huge fan of rap music, but many critics blasted the film for the rap music which was practically non existent - in fact, there were only one or two scenes with a few seconds of rap music. I think that some critics confused hip-hop styled instrumental music with rap music - GO FIGURE?

At the end of this movie, the guy realizes what it means to be a part of something bigger than himself. He comes to understand that he can’t focus on what he wants. He comes to understand that you can find ‘family’ in different places. It almost made me wish I joined a sorority when I was college. Damn, I guess I kicked all that girl power togetherness away….oh well I guess I’ll live.

This isn’t important stuff in the grand scheme of what is going on in the world, but the critics kicking this movie in the ass is just another stupid thing that I see in the world. This movie has led me to add a new category - Stupid Critics! I’m sure I’ll be adding more to this category.
