I have to say that I am SO sad to see that the racist comments have been allowed to continue so long after I first made this blog post. Well, we will keep talking about it because it is important. Hopefully, one day Yahoo will do something about it.

Here is a particularly vile and almost uncontested stream of anti Semitic posts. Some hiding antisemetism as "anti zionist" while others just give it the full racist assault, knowing yahoo will let their libels stand. If I were a Jewish person I would be in despair

As a Sociologist, I use the comments as a teaching tool and an example of the continued presence of racism in our society. So, while I am personally disgusted at the prevalence of ongoing racism in our society and the comments it generates, the ability to prove racism exists to students who feel race doesn't matter anymore is an important first step in addressing it.

As a minority I am highly offended and disgusted by all those racist comments, I truly believe Yahoo picks those articles on purpose. I have since deleted my email account and anything associated with them but its still not enough. Every story revolves around their hatred for anything that is different from them. That site makes me lose faith in humanity. Its about time a watchdog group got involved like Brandon said. Just pick one if not all, They all have been the brunt of the abuse. The saddest part is that non Americans read all this crap and then assume that all Americans are evil, racist, and spiteful people which goes against our agendas.

I've read all the comments here and couldn't agree more. Yahoo has become a breeding ground for blatant racism. The Zimmerman case has brought with it several stories that produce thousands of the most vile, evil-spirited commentary imaginable. Neoconservative racists proliferate the site, easily outnumbering any rational posters, and they act in unison to censor opposing views by "thumbing down" anything they don't agree with. It's become a cesspool of hate, and Yahoo appears fine with it all. I came here looking for some plan of action, but haven't seen many ideas. What can we do, aside from writing Yahoo (which hasn't seemed to help)? What media watchdog groups can put pressure on Yahoo to clean up their mess??

I think that people actually need to pay attention to those comments for one reason. They are proof of what many people actually feel. Many people claim that the U.S. is over race and that minority groups should 'get over it'. I believe that many Americans are still incredibly racist but just keep it private. However, in so many ways (personal and institutionalized) they act on it. The comments section is a reminder of what is in many Americans.

I've given a thought about not being informed of news anymore. I want to know what people think, but those comment sections are just too much. Sometimes I wonder who is behind those comments, the kind of people. It's all like a popularity contest trying to grab other people's attention.

Other sites comments are pretty bad, but Yahoo's are the worst. And the fact that they are so visible (they have thumbs up and down, which you will get lots of thumbs down if you are not in line with their thought process - making a lot of people either decide not to comment because anyway you are going to get like 50 thumbs down, insulted, or just go with the crowd because it seems that's what people like and since the majority agree, it must be the right thing.

For me, navigating through Yahoo comments is like swimming against the current with lots of sharks on it.

Some people are just so brainwashed about stuff. They don't question anything - they just take whatever they have and want to push it through others throats.

I agree with free speech, but I agree more with being human and respectful even if the law doesn't require you to.

I too am horrified by the yahoo comments. I mostly just ignore the offensive onslaught and move on. I think their is just a small, but very active group or groups of individuals who make it a point of poisoning these boards for various reasons. A lot are people too afraid to confront a real person. After all, you really don't hear these things said out loud, really. Others think they are influencing elections, and will say anything, or make up anything. After all this, I think we should keep these comment boards just for the proof that racism and cynicism is real. If you hear somebody say that racism is overstated, just direct their attention to these boards. I think its important. As much as some of these comments turn my stomach, I still say let it be.
